When it comes to business, networking is key. You’ve likely heard the phrase “Your Network is Key to Your Net Worth”. It’s how you make connections and build relationships that can help you grow your business.
The power of networking was fully demonstrated last month at The Edmonton Shaw Theatre, when BizWell Studio partnered with the Levasseur Community Trust, INNhotels, and Grove RV to screen “A Going Concern: The Life of Gerry Levasseur” amongst over 200 business people, including entrepreneurs and businesses hailing from Edmonton, Stony Plain, and Spruce Grove.

The Story of Gerry Levasseur
“A Going Concern” is the inspiring tale of Gerry Levasseur, a serial entrepreneur from Edmonton who has made a tremendous difference in many communities across Canada. Gerry’s life exemplifies doing business for a cause and serving others. You can watch the film on BizWell Studio.
Gerry’s journey to becoming an iconic Alberta entrepreneur was not always easy, as he lost his father at 17. From founding his first firm in little Devon, AB, to owning an empire of hotels, RV dealerships, resorts, apartment buildings, and equestrian centers — Gerry has a natural sense for recognizing a business opportunity when he sees one.
Gerry was instrumental in creating Maligne Lake, one of the most photo-worthy locations on Earth. At the age of 88, Gerry is still involved with his businesses. He has made a positive impact on many people’s lives.
Bringing the Edmonton Business Community Together After the Pandemic
After the film screening, the daughter of Gerry Levasseur and co-founder of BizWell Studio, Lisa Levasseur, thanked the filmmaking team for telling her father’s story and for the business community gathering to watch it. “Such heartfelt thanks to you and everyone that came, for supporting us and especially all those who contributed in any way to help raise money Levasseur Community Trust to give back to our communities,” Lisa said. “The night meant the world to my parents.”
The film served as the main reason to gather, but it was by no means the only one. For many entrepreneurs, this was the first in-person networking since the days of Covid-19 pandemic.
The Levasseur Community Trust and BizWell Studio not only wanted to provide an opportunity for business people to network with each other and build relationships that could help them grow their businesses post Covid-19, but the proceeds also benefitted mental health, victim services, and food banks.
Lisa gave her thanks to the the staff and others from the hotel business that Gerry started and handed down to her, “Most importantly I want to thank all those that work hard every day and have come together to help support our organization, along with those we serve as guests INNhotels.com and customers of all our businesses.”
The event included a marketplace featuring local businesses and a wine tasting courtesy of the District Wine Village from Oliver, BC. Local businesses put up raffle prizes, and at the end of the evening, the raffle prizes gifted contained flowers, wines, and other great gifts valued at over $2000.
A panel of experts joined to talk about the big issues facing entrepreneurs in 2022 and the roller coaster of running a business. To top it off, wellness practitioners shared tips on how to keep employees healthy and productive.
The other two co-founders of BizWell Studio and producer’s of the film also remarked on a great evening.
Jennifer Unruh, co-founder of BizWell Studio and co-producer of the film, said, “We had experts talking about internet marketing; Lisa [Levasseur] shared her experience taking over some of her Dad’s businesses and issues facing entrepreneurs today. Hiring is a big issue. We had a lot of interesting discussions because of that.”
“There’s a bit of synergy that can grow from people coming together – they must have a similar cause for doing so,” said the film’s director and co-founder of BizWell Studio, Laurent Goldstein.
“That is why, when we organize an event, one of our goals is to create an energy source that allows individuals who were destined to meet but would have otherwise never encountered each other to do so and have a fantastic synergy.”
“You grow a lot faster when you meet the right people. It facilitates a connection between people who can greatly benefit from working together. We all went there in the spirit of doing business, giving back, staying young as you age, and watching an inspiring documentary – things are going to happen as a result,” said Laurent.
The Real Power of Networking in Business and Life
When it comes to networking, there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Networking is a part of life, and it is a skill that can be learned.
People often think networking is about attending events and collecting business cards, but it is much more than just meeting people. Networking is about building genuine relationships and developing trust. It is about giving without expecting anything in return.
When done correctly, networking can lead to new opportunities, collaboration, joint efforts, and great wealth. Some people think that you have to be an extrovert or know a lot of people in order to network effectively. However, the truth is that putting people first is the #1 key in your toolbox to making a difference in the world and enjoying life to the fullest.
“When you network with like-minded people who want to give back, it elevates your energy to a higher level,” said Jennifer after the event. “You can gain a lot of knowledge from successful people, even from their attitude.”
“I notice that those who are unsuccessful dwell on the little details. The successful individuals are the ones focused on big goals,” Jennifer said.
By celebrating the people you meet, listening to their stories, and being inspired by their ambition, you too can learn how to set your sights high and achieve great things. There are many ways to network, and some people are naturally better at it than others. If you’re not a natural networker, don’t worry – there are plenty of things you can do to improve your skills. Here are some tips:
Focus on Developing Great Relationships Over Time
When you network, you have the opportunity to develop relationships with people who share similar interests. These relationships can be beneficial both professionally and personally. Sometimes, these relationships can lead to new business opportunities and lasting friendships.
The most important thing to remember when networking is to be genuine and authentic. People can see through people acting fake, so don’t try to be someone you’re not. Instead, focus on developing real relationships with people.
Another important thing to remember when networking is that it’s not all about you. It’s important to focus on the other person and what they want or need. If you can help them in some way, they’ll be more likely to remember you and want to help you in return.
Expand Your Professional Network
Your professional network is a group of people you can rely on for advice, help, and support. When you network, you have the opportunity to expand your professional network. This can be beneficial when you are looking for a new job, hiring new employees, or trying to grow your business.
Your professional network is your net worth. It’s important to keep in touch with the people you meet and follow up after networking events. You can do this by sending a thank-you note, connecting on social media, or meeting for coffee.
Your Network is Everything, So Work On It
Don’t underestimate the power of networking! You will access new resources, including people, information, and ideas, when you network well.
There are many different types of networking opportunities, from informal meetups to large conferences. Some events may be specifically for business networking, while others may be more general in nature.
The resources, both knowledge and access no doubt will be beneficial when trying to solve a problem or improve your business.
While the typical image of free-market competition is one in which dogs compete for top position. The ideal world we live in, is not a “dog-eat-dog” race to the top. It should be more like a big potluck dinner, with everyone bringing their own specialty dish to share. And networking is how you get asked to join in on the fun.
Why You Can’t Miss Out On Your Next Oppurtunity to Network
When you network, you will also have the opportunity to stay informed about your industry. This is beneficial because it allows you to stay ahead of the curve and make better decisions for your business.
You really can’t miss out on keeping a tab on everything happening in your industry and business communities. Their stories will empower yours.
Additionally, by networking you will also build the support system you need. When you have an issue or need advice, you will have people to turn to who can help you. This is invaluable and can make all the difference in your success.
You never know when you will meet someone who can help you take your business to the next level. Maybe you’ll meet a potential investor or partner. Maybe you’ll find your next great employee. There are endless possibilities when you network and get connected with other people.
The bottom line is that networking is a powerful tool that can be used to improve your life and business. If you are not networking, you are missing out on opportunities to meet new people, learn new things, and grow your business.
